- Do you long for emotional connection with your spouse?
- Is communication the issue? Tired of the same old fight over and over?
- Do you love your spouse, just not “in love”? Do you have arguments too often?
- Want a counselor who says more than “And how does that make you feel?”
I can help you sort out your issues and help you make changes to have a more satisfying and meaningful life. My aim is to be a vehicle for God’s healing in people’s lives and relationships.
In my counseling career of over 36 years, I have done over 26,000 hours of therapy and have counseled over 2,500 clients (a couple or family is equal to one client).
My 3 degrees in marriage and family studies are from Ohio State, Michigan State and I received my doctorate from Florida State University in 1982. I have been on the faculty of both LSU and Louisiana Tech teaching marriage & child development classes. Also I am licensed as an:
- LPC – Licensed Professional Counselor
- LMFT – Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist
- Certified in EFCT – Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy
I was the founding Director of Baton Rouge Christian Counseling Center, serving in that capacity for exactly 30 years (1991-2021). I have been married since 1980 to a wonderful man, Pete Adams, and together we co-lead a workshop for couples, “Created for Connection”. I became a Christian in Pittsburgh in 1967 through Young Life. Since 1980 my husband and I have been members of the Chapel on the Campus, a nondenominational church on LSU’s campus.
Dee accepts cash, checks, and credit card payments (Visa, Mastercard and Discover only).
Dr Adams does not take insurance but can provide a receipt with a diagnosis for you to file with your insurance company for “out of network benefits” for reimbursement. Generally most insurance companies do not cover couples counseling. Call your insurance carrier to check.
Call me ….. I want to provide a safe place for you to talk!

EFCT (Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy) In 2008 Dr. Adams started her training in EFCT with an Externship in San Diego with the founder of EFCT, Dr. Sue Johnson. In 2011, Dee became the first certified EFCT Therapist in Louisiana.
What IS Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFCT)? The message of EFCT is simple: IT’S ALL ABOUT THE BOND. EFCT gets to the root of the problem and helps couples reconnect after arguments or tensions.
EFCT Goals:
NEW DEEPER & DIFFERENT EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCES
UNDERSTAND ARGUMENT CYCLE, HOW TO STOP IT, HOW TO RECOVER FROM IT
- Understand your negative cycle; where and how you lose each other
- See HOW you impact and trigger each other
- See your usual move (action tendency) and your part in the cycle
- See how YOUR protection/block triggers your spouse
- Be able to understand/articulate what your spouse does in the cycle and why it makes sense
- Know how to de-escalate and stop your cycle
- Know how to re-connect
EFCT has an astounding success rate and results have been shown to last, even in the face of significant stress. Research shows approximately 70-90% of couples show significant improvements. In comparison, usual couples counseling is proven to be only about 20-35% effective.
Forget about learning how to argue better,
analyzing your early childhood, or
making grand romantic gestures.
Instead, recognize and admit that you are emotionally attached to and dependent on your partner (or want that safe haven) in much the same way that a child is bonded to a parent for nurturing, soothing, and protection.
EFCT focuses on creating and strengthening this emotional bond by identifying and transforming the key moments that foster an adult loving relationship.
IT’S ALL ABOUT THE BOND AND KNOWING HOW TO BE ATTACHED, NOT BREAK THE BOND, AND QUICKLY REPAIR IT WHEN DISTRESS OCCURS.
Stops the patterns paralyzing most couples:
PURSUE-WITHDRAW, or
WITHDRAW-WITHDRAW, or
ATTACK-ATTACK
EFCT doesn’t take years of therapy, like other couples counseling.
EFCT is a 9 STEP, short term (can be just 12-20 sessions), structured approach to couples therapy formulated by Dr. Sue Johnson.
EFCT is recognized by the American Psychological Association as empirically proven. It really works.
